In the field of paternity testing, the terms accuracy and probability are often confused.
- Accuracy is a measure of a test’s correctness. It is also a reflection of the quality of the test processes and testing staff.
- Probability indicates the likelihood of the tested biological relationship.
These terms are further explained below.
Accuracy
Genetic testing from DNA Bioscience is 100% accurate because:
- Your DNA test is run twice. Two teams independently process the samples for every case and compare their findings to ensure they are the same. This reduces the possibility of errors that can be caused by sample mix-ups and contamination, which can lead to a false exclusion (an inaccurate report that the tested man is not the father).
- Our laboratory is staffed with experienced experts. Our PhD scientists have decades of experience in the genetic testing field and are adept at accurately interpreting DNA test results. Every test is reviewed by a PhD before the results are released.
- Extended analysis is performed when needed. When necessary, our laboratory examines additional DNA markers to ensure accurate results. This extended testing is useful when we encounter common difficult situations such as genetic mutations or related alleged fathers.
- Our laboratory is state of the art. Our laboratory is equipped with the latest advancements in DNA testing technology. The PCR thermocyclers, robotics systems, and genetic analysers reduce the possibility of human error, helping ensure the accuracy of our test results.
No other laboratory can truthfully make all of the above claims.
Probability
When you receive your paternity test results, you will see a Probability of Paternity. This value indicates how likely it is that the alleged father is the biological father of the child.
- A Probability of Paternity of 99% or higher indicates that the alleged father tested is not excluded as the biological father of the child. We routinely achieve probabilities well above 99.99% for our paternity tests.
- A Probability of Paternity of 0% indicates that the alleged father is not the biological father of the child.
Note: When an alleged father is not excluded as the biological father, the Probability of Paternity will always be 99% or higher (often 99.99% or higher). This percentage is based on calculations that are performed using a population database to determine the likelihood of relationship. We can never guarantee a probability of 100%. To achieve this, we would have to test and exclude every other man in the world.
The results of other family relationship DNA tests will present similar probabilities. A grandparentage test, for example, will show a Probability of Grandparentage. A maternity test will show a Probability of Maternity. You can read these numbers in the same way as described above.
In conclusion, when your test results come back with a probability value of 99% (or greater) or 0%, you can rest assured that the test results are 100% accurate.
